About the Wegovy Pill
The Wegovy Pill is an oral form of semaglutide licensed for weight management. It offers the appetite-regulating benefits of the GLP-1 class in a tablet taken once a day, which makes it a strong option for anyone who would rather avoid injections or who has no reliable fridge space.
Getting a peptide to survive the stomach
Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides are normally destroyed by stomach acid, which is why GLP-1 medicines have historically been injectable. The tablet is formulated with an absorption enhancer that temporarily raises the pH immediately around the tablet, protecting the semaglutide long enough for it to cross the stomach lining.
This is also why the dosing instructions are unusually strict. Food, drink and other medicines in the stomach all interfere with that narrow absorption window.
Expected weight loss
In the OASIS-4 trial, adults taking 25mg oral semaglutide lost an average of around 16% of their body weight over 64 weeks, placing it broadly in line with the injectable version.
Who is it for?
The Wegovy Pill may be prescribed if you have a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition, and you can commit to the daily dosing routine.
How the Wegovy Pill works
The active ingredient is identical to the injection, semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Once absorbed, it does exactly the same three things.
- Reduces appetite by acting on the hypothalamus, lowering hunger and raising satiety
- Slows gastric emptying, so meals keep you full for longer
- Improves glucose control by prompting insulin release and suppressing glucagon
Daily rather than weekly
Oral semaglutide has a much shorter effective window than the injection, so it is taken every day to maintain steady blood levels. Some people prefer this, a daily tablet is easier to build into an existing routine than remembering a specific day each week. Others find the strict fasting window more demanding than a weekly jab.
Why absorption consistency matters
Take it correctly and blood levels stay steady. Take it with food or a large drink and absorption drops sharply, which can blunt both the appetite effect and your results.
How to take the Wegovy Pill
The rules that matter
- Take it first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before anything else
- Swallow it whole with no more than half a glass of plain water (about 120ml)
- Do not eat, drink anything else, or take other medicines for at least 30 minutes
- Do not split, crush or chew the tablet
Setting an alarm 30 minutes before you normally have breakfast makes this straightforward, take the tablet when it goes off, then start your day as usual.
Dose schedule
You start at a low dose and step up roughly every four weeks: 1.5mg, then 4mg, then 9mg, then 25mg as the maintenance dose. Your prescriber may hold you longer at any step depending on tolerance.
Missed dose
Skip the missed tablet entirely and take the next one at your usual time the following morning. Do not take two in one day, and do not take one later in the day after eating, it will not absorb properly.
